CMA CGM Marco Polo

CMA CGM Marco Polo is the first container ship in a class of three owned by the CMA CGM group. On 5 November 2012, it became the largest containership in the world measured by capacity, as it can hold 16,020 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit containers). The previous largest was Emma Mærsk and her seven sisters of the Mærsk E-class. TheMaersk Triple E class, currently under construction, will be even larger.

The capacity is 10,000 TEU if all are fully loaded 14 ton containers, compared to 11,000 for Emma Mærsk.

Symbol of the pioneer spirit of the CMA CGM Group, the new 16 000 TEU vessel, owned by CMA CGM, sails under the UK flag.

Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea, the giant of the seas displays exceptional dimensions: 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters. The CMA CGM MARCO POLO is the first of a series of three 16 000 TEU vessels, that will all be named after great explorers. The delivery of the two next vessels is expected in 2013.

The FAL1 operates the largest vessels of the CMA CGM fleet and offers its customers a fixed-day, weekly connection between Central and South China, the main exporting zones of the country, and Northern Europe. The direct service to Southampton and to Hamburg offers European importers the fastest transit times of the market.
The FAL1 is part of a global network of 8 CMA CGM services connecting Asia to Europe Atlantic, the most thorough offer on the market, and which is based on 29 vessels of 11,400 to 16,000 TEUs.

In line with the sustainable development policy of the Group, CMA CGM MARCO POLO is equipped with all the latest environmental technologies:
An electronically controlled engine allowing a significantly reduced consumption of fuel(-3% on average) and of lub oil (-25%)
A twisted leading edge rudder improving the hydrodynamics of the vessel (optimisation of the water flow), and significantly reducing energy expenditures as well as CO2 emissions.
A Pre-Swirl Stator® allowing the straightening up of the water flow upstream from the propeller in order to improve its productivity. Combined with the twisted leading edge rudder, this innovation optimizes the hydrodynamics of the vessel and makes it possible to reduce by 2 to 4% the consumption of energy and the atmospheric emissions.

Technology found on board the Marco Polo

The CMA CGM Marco Polo has all the very latest innovative technologies to protect the environment.

An “Exhaust Gas Bypass” system, which improves the energetic efficiency of the vessel, reducing the fuel consumption by 1.5% at low speeds.

We have also fitted a ballast water treatment system. The water is filtered and passed under UV lamps to ensure that no living organism is transported in the ballast tanks to colonize the habitat of local species during rotations.

We have also modified the engines to reduce the quantity of NOx (nitrogen oxide) in the exhaust gases.

Modifications have also been made to the pipe plan to facilitate use of low sulphur MDO (diesel) in European ports.

Finally, from now on the regulation requires calculation of an energy efficiency index and sets maximum values that will gradually decrease (called EEDI or the Energy Efficiency Design Index). The target set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) by 2025 is a 30% reduction of the EEDI. The CMA CGM MARCO POLO already meets the 2025 demand with an EEDI value of 10.37, that’s 31% below the maximum value allowed.

In addition, the Marco Polo has an electronically-controlled Wärtsilä engine which reduces fuel and lube oil consumption by 3% and 25% respectively on average. The installed engine is the smaller 11-cylinder version of the world’s largest marine engine found on board the Maersk E-class, the 14-cylinder, 80,080 kW Wärtsilä 14RT-flex96C.

The large container ships impress us with size, capacity and technology development. Sovereign Maersk is one of the largest container ships built ever. The cargo ship is owner and managed by Ap Moller Maersk, which is one of the largest operators in maritime transport. Sovereign Maersk has large and impressive measurements and environmental technology. The cargo ship has overall length of 331.98 meters, beam of 42.80 meters and depth of 21.00 meters. The draft of the cargo ship, when the ship is fully loaded can reach 14.50 meters. The size of the vessel is not itself of the owner, but hull design is improved to have large capacity of cargo. The deadweight of Sovereign Maersk is 104,690 metric tons and the gross tonnage is 91,560 gross tons. The capacity of the container ship is 8,160 TEU, divided into 17 containers tiers and 13 rows. The cargo handling on such type of ship is really hard job, because of the large amount of different cargo types and destinations, but the improved Maersk Software is making this job really fast and easy. This is speeding up the work of the Chief Officer and the operation of the ship.

The cargo ship was built in 1997 in Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. The shipbuilder is definitely one of the highest quality and best known builders of the world, as most of the large European ships are built there. The cargo ship builders have made one of the most powerful, most profitable and most environmental ships, installing some of the latest technologies in shipping and engineering. Speed                   24.3kt
Classification       BV CleanShip, Green Passport
Owners                 CMA CGM
Operator              CMA CGM

CMA CGM Christophe Colomb is one of the largest container ships in the world. It is also the largest container ship ever to cruise under French flag. The ship was delivered to CMA CGM Group on 10 November 2009 in South Korea. It was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) at Geoje Shipyard in South Korea. The ship was christened by Christine Lagarde, Minister of Economic Affairs, Industry and Employment in July 2010 at Terminal de France, Le Havre.
Christophe Colomb is the first of the eight sister ships ordered by CMA CGM. The subsequent vessels in the series will be named after great explorers Marco Polo, Vasco de Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, Corte Real, La Perouse, Magellan and Zheng. The second ship, CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci, was delivered in July 2010. In technical terms, these ships will be very similar to MSC Daniela Class ships.

As decided by the owner, the ship will be deployed on the FAL 5 (French Asia Line), which is operated in partnership with Maersk. On this line, CMA CGM will deploy its one vessel, while nine vessels will be deployed by Maersk. Through this decision, CMA CGM is expecting to optimise its new transport capacity and improve service quality.

Christophe Colomb design
With an overall length of 365.5m and beam of 51.2m, the ship is capable of holding 13,300TEUs of cargo and ten passengers. The designed gross tonnage of the ship is 153,022t, net tonnage is 81,900t and the deadweight has been kept at 157,092t. The length between perpendiculars, and depth of the ship, have been maintained at 349.5m and 29.9m, respectively.
"CMA CGM Christophe Colomb is one of the largest container ships in the world."

Ship construction
The ship has been built in compliance with the MARPOL 12A regulations which became effective from August 2010. The ship has been built with a steel double-hull to protect its fuel tanks located underneath the superstructure. In general, a container ship has its single superstructure established on the deck.
The superstructure of Christophe Colomb is, however, located in the front. This adjustment allows the ship to be better visible from the bridge and utilises maximum space. To further maximise the use of space, the engine room has been built close to the propeller. In order to minimise the environmental footprint of its activities, the ship has been fitted with numerous environmental technologies. In order to treat bilge, engine and grey water, the ship is equipped with additional tanks. These tanks are linked with connecting pipes to allow the extraction of hydrocarbons by injecting hot water.
The ship is also equipped with a Fast Oil Recovery System which is a new pollution prevention technique developed by JLMD. This system helps in rapid recovery of hydrocarbons without going through the hull.

Accommodation
Christophe Colomb is furnished with four double-bedded and one twin cabin to accommodate its ten passengers. The ship also has a dedicated passenger lounge, library and an outside terrace. There is also a swimming pool and gym to allow passengers to stay fit.

Christophe Colomb propulsion
The ship is installed with WARTSILA 14 RT-flex 96C diesel propelling engine. The electronic injection system of the engine allows the ship to reduce its bunker fuel consumption by 3% and oil consumption by 25%. " In order to minimise the footprint of its activities, the ship has been fitted with environmental technologies." The ship also has two 4,125kVA- 4,755HP and two 4,800kVA-5,435HP diesel generators. Christophe Colomb has got the distinction of being the first vessel of the CMA CGM Group to be equipped with a Pre-Swirl Stator and twisted leading edge rudder.
While this innovative rudder edge reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions by optimising the water flow, the Pre-Swirl Stator helps in maximising propulsion efficiency by altering inflow angles to the propeller. Working together, both these devices are capable of cutting down fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 2% to 4% by optimising the overall hydrodynamics of the ship.
The ship can cruise at a top speed of 24.3kt but if required it can be operated at a super eco-speed of 14 to 15kt.

m/v Emma Maersk

 Lenght: 397 m
   Beam: 56 m
   Depth: 30 m
   Draft: 15.5 m
   Deadweight: 156,907 mt
   GT: 170,974 mt
   NT: 156,907 mt
   TEUs: 11,000
   Speed: 25.6 kn
   Ship-yard: Odense Steel
   Engine: Wartsila, 80 MW

The vessel, which is the largest one in container shipping of the world is called Emma Maersk.According to calculation from IMO the ship can carry between 13,500 and 15,800 TEUs, which is more than 4,000 containers more, than the previous leader in this class - Xin Shanghai. Emma Maersk is the ship that is not only beautiful with its measurements, but also beautiful with its looking and safety. The ship is wonderful and large as much as your imagine can reach. The lenght of Emma Maersk is 397 meters, and the width is 56 meters. This is a wonderful for such a metal vessel, and just some years ago people did not imagine that metal can sail. But now engineers showed how 156 thousand tons are sailing without any problems in the sea and can fight with waves and heavy seas. That is wonderful for such vessel and for people that had constructed this vessel.
Emma Maersk was built in Odense Steel Ship-yard by some of the most known engineers of the world. The ship is designed to be strong and to have enought stability to stay in front of the largest waves seen ever. That is very important because the container vessel is fighting not only with sea and cargo, but with time also.
The story about the fire on Emma Maersk is one of the most known stories, that built the outlooking and the name of Emma Maersk. That is exciting story, how into the ship yard of Lind Yard, just after some tests of the largest container vessel of the world, in June, that fire into the superstructure. This fire quickly raised to bridge and accommodation. Emma Maersk was just a step from losing itself, but firemen did their work and saved the greatest vessel of the world. That was a fantastic story about newspapers and very terrible feeling of ship-owner and the crew.
The other story of the vessel is Christmas 2006, when the ship came into Unite Kingdom with more than 5 thousand containers with presents for the kids in the greatest Christian holiday. The ship ran up the schedule to reach the country just some days before the Christmas and that brought a lot of happiness for many children and people that wait for the beautiful holiday. That story is combining love and fear. That ship is combining everything in it, and so long story, for so short time on water.
